Setting up Grading in Canvas

Once you determine how you will grade your class, you will setup Canvas to reflect your decision. Don’t forget that your grading skema must conform to Lincoln Lutheran’s Grading Guidelines.

Assignment Groups (required)

Below are some commonly used Assignment Groups (sometimes referred to as categories of grades). Note that they are general in nature. You would not create assignment groups for each topic or unit. You will use Modules to organize assignments on that level. Teachers tend to have from 2 to 5 groups of assignments.

  • Tasks (Typically used for non-graded assignments like “read 17-24”, but you could also included these in your Homework category and mark them as “Not Graded”.)
  • Homework
  • Quizzes
  • Tests
  • Assessments (Maybe you want to combine quizzes and test in one category)
  • Projects
  • Assignments (This one is created for you automatically by Canvas. It is okay to delete this group if you do not want to use it.
  • Anything else (Maybe ask someone with more Canvas experience if your choice makes sense)

We tend not to use Summative and Formative as groups anymore, because our students associate “Formative” with “Not important.”

Setting up Assignment Groups in Canvas:

  1. Under Assignments click on the +Group button.
  1. Enter the name of the Assignment Group
  2. Optionally enter a weight for this entire group (so that all of your Assessment, for example, taken together count as 60% of the student’s total grade). For “Tasks” or any other group of assignment that do not count toward the final grade, you would enter 0 here. The total of all of your weights should add up to 100%.
  3. Click Save
  4. NOTE: If you see a field for weighting here, you can ignore it. We will cover that below.

Deleting unneeded assignment groups

You might see various assignment groups in Canvas that Canvas creates automatically, or that you decide that you no longer need. To delete an assignment group, first move assignment from that group into a new group (or delete the assignments if they are no longer needed).

  1. Click the vertical ellipse menu
  2. Choose Move Content
  3. Choose the Assignment Group to move the assignments to
  4. Choose where in the new Assignment Group to place the assignments

Then delete the unneeded assignment group.

Weighing Assignment Groups

Weighing your assignment groups is an easy way to make sure that each groups of assignments reflects your grading philosophy. From the Assignments screen, click on the vertical ellipse dropdown and choose Assignment Groups Weight.

On the next screen, you’ll see all of your Assignment Groups. If you don’t see any, look at the instructions above to add them. All you have to do on this page is assign the percentage of the grade you want each Assignment Group to have. It is fine to have one or more groups with 0% for a weight (for instance, the “Tasks” group mentioned above. Make sure that your weights are reflective of Lincoln Lutheran’s grading guidelines. first make sure the checkbox to Weight the final grade is checked. Then maybe make sure you created groups.
